The spirit dolls came about when I took possession of a basket of old wooden spools with colorful thread. The thread, along with a couple of sewing baskets full of notions, belonged to my mother who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It took me a long time to figure out how to utilize these objects; one day I stacked the thread in color families and I saw a figure. Some wire, beads, cloth, found objects, and paint were incorporated to make the “dolls.”
These aren’t dolls to play with or carry around for comfort. They hold bits and pieces of my mother’s life and the lives of other women who have come and gone from this world. They take a long time to make because they require a lot of thought, so a new one may pop up here every six months or so. All the dolls are either hangable (I do make stands for them if needed) or standable. Not suitable for small children due to choking hazards from small objects.
